I have been a crocheter for more than 30 years at this point. I have felt the powerful benefits of this amazing hobby since I was 10 years old, and many of them continue to this very day. I can talk about the benefits of crochet for kids for hours. So, I’m back with a second post on this topic.
In the last post, I outlined the first 5 benefits of crochet for kids. Here are the ones I covered in the first video of this series.
If you haven’t read it yet, you can find it here. Check it out once you’re done reading this post.
Don’t forget to stay until the end when I’m sharing my favourite benefit of crochet kids for kids.
Let’s dive into the next 5 ways that crochet helps kids!
1. Your child can meet other crocheters.
This is one of my favourite benefits. I love meeting other crocheters, and kids do too. We love sharing the crochet projects we’re working on, the stitches we are learning, and just chatting in general.
There are so many ways your child can enjoy this benefit. Look for crochet clubs at your child’s school or in your local community. If you can’t find in-person groups, there are a lot of them online. My crochet course, Crochet Made Easy! includes weekly live Q&A calls where kids can meet others in the course and get their crochet answered by me.
2. Crochet can others in their community.
Do a quick internet search, and you’ll find some charities or organizations in your local area that are in need of your child’s crochet skills. Your child can make crocheted items, and donate their creations to others.
I’ve done this many times over my years as a crocheter. A craft store in the city I used to live in collected knit and crocheted winter clothes to donate to a local organization. Last year I made a lot of hair scrunchies to donate to the local charities that my crochet club supports. It feels so good to make a difference in others’ lives. I am now in a local knitting and crochet club, where we make things out of donated yarn for numerous charities in the community.
3. Your child can make gifts for others.
Sure, your child could shop for gifts for others, and give the same thing as hundreds or thousands of other people are giving as gifts. Or, they could crochet their own gifts for family and friends. I know which one of those choices I’m going for.
I have a long-standing tradition of crocheting gifts for my family and friends. Almost every year my gifts include crocheted items. Some years it’s scarves, or others it’s crochet Christmas ornaments. I’m doing it again this year.
4. Crochet improves fine motor skills.
I get a lot of messages from parents, asking me how old their child needs to be in order to learn to crochet. Although this is a valid question, it is more about fine motor skills (and others I’ve talked about in these posts). Crochet involves holding and manipulating many different materials, including crochet hooks, yarns, sewing needles, and more.
Kids are ready to start learning to crochet when they have the ability to hold crochet materials, and to use them in a controlled way. These fine motor skills will continue to develop over time and practice in crochet. Also, your child’s manual dexterity and attention to detail will also improve over time.
Now my favourite benefit of crochet for kids.
5. Crochet gives a confidence boost!
I saved my favourite of the numerous crochet benefits for the end. Crochet in itself can be challenging and frustrating at times, even for me. Learning new stitches and following crochet patterns involves learning curves, but once your child figures it out or makes progress, that’s where the real confidence boost comes from.
When your child finishes their early crochet projects and stitches, they realize they are capable of doing hard things, and this inspires them to continue growing their skills. I see this every day in my crochet course, Crochet Made Easy! Most of the time, kids come to learn from me after trying to learn in other ways, getting frustrated, and almost giving up. I work with each student to support them as they learn to crochet using step-by-step instructions and kid-friendly crochet projects. They make huge progress during the course, and write to me later to send me photos of other crocheted items they go on to create. This could be your child as well!
